Over the past few years, virtual reality technology has made some big leaps forward. It has also become more accessible to almost everyone who owns a smartphone. The Jeep® brand is taking advantage of this technology by releasing a new virtual reality surfing experience called Jeep® Sessions: A Surfing Journey in 360°.
This adventure follows WSL Championship Tour surfers Jordy Smith and Malia Manuel as they look for the best waves. Users can view the journey either as a 360° video or as an interactive VR experience where their eyes become the controller.
Jeep® partnered with Rapid VR to create this unique surfing experience.
“Our project goal was to push the boundaries of VR technology to show what a surf trip feels like from the first-person perspective,” said Taylor Steele, Rapid VR co-director. “I’m excited to share this. It’s pretty incredible knowing my mom can now experience riding a 20-foot wave.”
You can enjoy this experience in a variety of formats. Watch it as a 360° video on your desktop, mobile device, or through a headset. It is also available as a custom app with the Jeep® Sessions: Surfing in 360° app available through iTunes, Google Play, Oculus Gear VR, or Daydream. We at Linwood CDJR have already had a blast trying it out.
