If you look at the current Jeep® lineup, two of the first things you’ll notice are diverse amenities and configurations — advanced driver-assist technologies, capable 4×4 systems, off-road-ready family-haulers, and eye-catching designs. But one thing you don’t really see in the Jeep® lineup is electric powertrains.
All that is set to change, though, according to a recent announcement from Fiat Chrysler. The automaker has publicly committed to making electric powertrains a major part of their model lineups in the near future. With both of its top selling brands in line for this update, we can expect to see electric Jeep® and Ram models sometime relatively soon.
Per Fiat Chrysler, the new wave of electric Jeep® and Ram vehicles will begin with four new Jeep® plug-in hybrids. Fiat Chrysler intends to eventually offer a range of powertrains for each of its Jeep® models. That way, consumers can opt for gas, diesel, plug-in hybrids, or all-electric, depending on their preference.
One of the biggest challenges will be to create electric powertrains that can still deliver the type of performance and capability that Jeep® is known for. However, “mild” hybrid powertrains — which provide battery-electric assist technology to enhance performance and efficiency — might help ease the transition as the company moves into the world of electric vehicles.
